These practice guidelines for the Canadian Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, Ontario Inc., have been developed as performance standards for rehabilitation counsellors. Applying these standards within your counselling practise has several benefits. They will enable you to provide the best possible services to people with disabilities or disadvantages. These guidelines will also assist the public, government, customers and other health care professionals to understand the profession of rehabilitation counselling. Code of Ethics (A CARP National Document)
The Rehabilitation Professional's primary responsibility is to his/her client. A client is defined as a person with a disability in receipt of the rehabilitation professional's services. Persons with disabilities include persons who have limitations in life functioning as a result of conditions such as sensory impairments, mental Illness, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, chemical dependencies, and/or physical disabilities. The Code of Ethics and Standards is the mechanism by which the public is protected in the delivery of services. The Code of Ethics and Standards consists of both a general Standard of Conduct and more specific Rules of Conduct subsumed under each Standard. Standards, in essence, set the goals; rules enable the meeting of these Standards in specific circumstances. Link to CARP National Code of Ethics
